Alfred A. Knopf, New York [and] London 1940 - Octavo, cloth. Classic crime novel by a master. This copy is inscribed by Burnett on the verso of the half title page: "For/ Jean / sincere best / WRBurnett." Filmed in 1941 by Raoul Walsh from a screenplay by Burnett and John Huston, starring Ida Lupino and Humphrey Bogart (remade as a Western in 1949: Colorado Territory). A very good copy, light bookstore stamps to several random pages in rear of the book in a very good dust jacket, some rubbing to folds and edges, spine shows mild color fade some soiling to rear panel. The rear flap of dust jacket is headed by the publisher's trademark Borzoi and states "A Catalogue of recent & forthcoming Borzoi Books." (13457) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
