MEMOIRS WRITTEN BY HIMSELF, With a Appendix, Bringing His Life Down to its Closing Scenes, also a Personal Tribute and Critique of the Memoirs, by Hon James G Blaine
New York: Charles L. Webster, 1892. 2 volumes. First edition as part of the Great War ?"Shoulder Strap?" series, the revised, corrected and complete edition as noted. Engraved portrait frontispiece, 15 folding maps and 4 other portraits. Tall, thick 8vo, original dark green cloth lettered in gilt on the spines and upper covers, the spines with the amulets in black and gold. 455; 604 pp. An unusually nice set, the cloth still nice and dark with bright gilt and only very minimal expected aging or evidence of shelving. Internally, very solid and very clean with only a light bit of the typical foxing at the prelims. FIRST EDITION OF THE SHOULDER STRAP ISSUE. An uncommon title in the Great War series (uniform with the MEMOIRS OF U. S. GRANT). A contemporary reviewer in the Atlantic Monthly said, "His book is such as our knowledge of him prepared us to expect, and it is a treat....His style is characteristic of the man. It is absolutely free from rhetorical ornament, and it does not hesitate to be colloquial in the extreme, but it is admirable in its clearness and directness.....he appends a concluding chapter on the military lessons of the war, which is full of knowledge, wisdom, and sound sense." An important record of inestimable historical importance.
