Texte en français uniquement, pas en anglais, et illustrés de très nombreuses reproductions dans le texte et de 64 planches hors-texte imprimées en héliogravures et chromolithographie, reliure de l'éditeur en soie ivoire décorée par une reproduction des Sansonnets sur le soleil couchant, d'après Shinman. This is not a bilingual edition. Text in French only, not in English. Printed in France. Complete in two volumes. This is copy no. 5 of 1400 copies of a limited edition printed on Japan paper. This is the large format edition, 14 x 10.5 inches. Ivory-colored silk bindings, with crisp orange-stamped title and black-stamped image of three birds against an orange background [Starlings at Sunset, by Shinman] to the front board of each volume. Lightly faded black- and orange-stamped lettering to the spines. The boards are lightly soiled and the spines are heavily soiled. As to both volumes, the spine head and tail are bumped and with fabric and underlayment losses. Most of the corners are moderately bumped and abraded. Hinges tender. Volume One with iv and 310 numbered pages. Volume Two with 369 numbered pages. Both volumes illustrated with many engravings in the text and with approximately 64 plates bound in. Specifically, 13 etchings, 21 heliogravures, 2 prints in black and gold, 10 chromolithographs and 18 watercolors. Artists include: M. Henri Guérard, M. Dujardin, M. Guillaume, M. Gillot, ME-L. Montefiore, M. Coin, M. Lefevre and M. Lemoine. Most of the plates with tissue guards present. Scattered light to moderate foxing to both volumes, especially to the preliminaries, and also affecting some of the plates. Previous owner bookplate, very small and discreet, to the bottom of the front pastedown of each volume. Else a clean set. A Good Minus set of two volumes. A significant work regarding various aspects of Japanese art: painting, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts, and lacquers. From the private library of Herbert McLean Evans, with his bookplate to the front pastedowns. Evans [1882-1971] was a highly regarded U.S. anatomist and embryologist. He was an ardent collector of rare books and of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.. Presumed First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Good Minus. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Limited Edition.
