Faust. Tragedie de Goethe selon la traduction de Gerard de Nerval.
Ch. Henchoz, Paris 1938 - Sublime edition of Goethe's Faust illustrated by Art Deco master Francois-Louis Schmied. Considered one of the greatest book illustrators of the 20th century, Ward Ritchie calls this Faust "the most ambitious project that Schmied had undertaken to publish". Schmied began work on the book in 1929 but due to the financial repercussions arising from the Great Depression was forced to abandon the project for a number of years. Fortunately, the publisher Charles Henchoz agreed to sponsor and publish the book in 1936 and work was resumed. Schmied painted sixty-six illustrations for the book which were then engraved on wood by his son Theo. Ritchie states that "Schmied, from his outpost in Morocco carefully supervised the printing of the illustrations. It is an amazing example of the devotion to perfection that Schmied had." Printed in a limited edition of 106 copies, this copy is number 79, signed by the author in pencil. I could locate only three copies of this work in the United States. 4to (35 x 24cm), 66 compositions in color, including 20 full-page plates. Loose as issued in original wrappers, uncut, original cloth folder and slip-case. Offsetting as is common with Schmied due to his special formula for ink. A few very slight foxing marks. Fine condition. [Carteret Illustrés IV, 188.]
