Dialogues des Courtisanes
1948. MAILLOL, Aristide. Dialogues des Courtisanes. By Lucien. Translated by Charles Astruc. Illustrated with 35 lithographs by Maillol. Folio, loose as issued in the original wrappers and new cloth slipcase. Paris: Henri Creuzevault and Dina Vierny, 1948. |~||~||~||~| Maillol was a prolific book illustrator, who illustrated several classical texts, the best known of which is the edition of Virgil published by the Cranach Press. The illustrations in this work bear comparison to those he made for Ovid's L'Art d'Aimer of 1935. Both books being perfect texts to be accompanied by his voluptuous nudes. The lithographs in this work were printed by Mourlot four years after Maillol's death. One of an edition of 275 copies. For some reason this is a very scarce book. It has escaped the notice of all the standard books on twentieth-century book illustration, and no copies are listed as having been at auction on ABPC.
