Arabesques Mythologiques, ou les Attributs de Toutes les Divinites de la Fable Ouvrage fait pour servir a l'education de la Jeunesse
Chez Charles Barrois, Paris 1810 - 8vo. 22 by 13 cm. xxx, 166 pp. With 54 color plates. The plates are color stipple engravings finished by hand. The plates are of elaborate decorative iconology, much of which is tantamount to classic trophies, with interesting juxtapositions of botanical, zoological, figurative and inanimate objects. These arrangements range from just a few elements to extravagant visual cornupcopias. Each of these illustrations relates to a character out of mythology, and the text explains directly and indirectly the connection. In essence, then, the book is an updated version of the then hoary emblem book, but one that is particularly curious inasmuch as its presumed target audience was children, and such a heavy dose of decorative emblems surely was not typical fare for such readers. On the other hand, one can imagine architects and designers of the era mining the illustrations for inspiration in terra cotta relief, doree mounts and other expressions of decorative exuberance. Gumuchian 2699. Scattered soiling and light foxing. Moderate wear to the cover. Quarter Morocco, Marbled Boards [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
