Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in London in 1875, the son of a doctor from Sierra Leone and an English mother. His musical talent was recognized at a young age, and he received his first major commission in 1898 from the Three Choirs Festival when Edward Elgar was unable to fulfill a commission and suggested the younger composer instead. Coleridge-Taylor responded with his Ballade in A minor, followed later the same year with the major success of Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. Coleridge-Taylor, who named his son Hiawatha, was the first composer to set the text of Longfellow's Song of Hiawatha (1855), a poem that was very popular in England at the time, to music. His four Hiawatha cantatas were first performed on separate occasions between 1898 and 1900; the present one was premièred on 26 October 1899. Occasional pencil or crayon performance markings. No copies at auction listed in ABPC CD ROM and 2 copies listed in OCLC. PROVENANCE: Dr. Allen K. Blackall with his signature on boards and front free endpaper. Blackall began his career in music as an organist of St Mary's, Warwick, in 1898 and was later conductor at the Birmingham Festival Choral Society 1904-1933.
