Seiyo Shinsho
URYU, Masazaku. Seiyo Shinsho. Six Volumes. Illustrated with approximately 80 woodcut views and 6 pages of colour woodblock maps. 8vo., 225 x 150 mm, bound in Japanese-style sewn bindings with paper labels as issued, in a new cloth folding box. Tokyo: Yamatoya Kihe: Meiji 5 [1872]. |~||~||~||~| A marvelous nineteenth century Japanese history of the United States and Mexico, full of wonderful woodcuts of such diverse subjects as the White House, Franklin flying his kite and the American flag, as well as battle scenes from the American Revolution and the Civil War. An extraordinary publication coming only twenty years after Perry opened up Japan to the West. Some minor worming, but overall a fine set.
