Rome: Domenico de Rossi, 1708. |~||~||~||~||~||~| A fine copy of this collaboration between the art historian Gian Pietro Bellori and the engraver Pietro Santo Bartoli which depicts and describes the sculptures on the column of Marcus Aurelius. It also contains the supplementary volume which depicts the lettering on the base of the Antonine column. The column of Marcus Aurelius (A.D. 174), similar in size and design to Trajan's but with larger, deeper-cut figures, was erected in the Piazza Colonna to commemorate the Emperor's victorious campaigns against the German tribes north of the Danube. The statue of Marcus Aurelius on top was replaced by the existing statue of Saint Paul in 1589. Some minor staining, but overall a fine copy.
