FIRST ENGLISH EDITION 1677, folio in fours, approximately 290 x 185 mm, 11½ x 7¼ inches, title page printed in red and black, a few decorated initials, pages: [4], 415, [1]; 758, collation: A2, B-Z4, Aa-Zz4, Aaa-Ggg4; A-Zzzz4, Aaaaa-Ccccc4 (-Ccccc4 - a blank), rebacked in calf to style, raised bands, small blind ornament in compartments, earlier gilt lettered green morocco label, original marbled boards with leather corners, endpapers replaced. Board very worn and scuffed, large pale stain to top third of upper cover, repeated on front endpapers, title page and faintly up to B3, neat name in top margin of title page, a few early notes in pale ink in blank areas of title page, lower fore-edge of title page very slightly worn, a little messy ink underlining especially to early pages, a few pages lightly browned, many pages have small pale stains, tiny dark marks or small ink marks, no loss of legibility, some upper margins trimmed, no loss of running titles, tiny rust hole in text on Hh3 (1st series) with loss of a few letters, small tear and tiny chip to lower margin of P2 (2nd series), Aa2-Aa3 (2nd series) slightly worn at fore-edge, 2 small chips to fore-edge margin on Xxx1, small piece torn off lower blank corner of Mmmm4 and Yyyy4. A good sturdy copy of the first English translation. The work is a historical romance featuring the Franks and Merovingians to 987. La Calprenede (1610-1663) wrote several historical romances of which the best known are Cassandra and Cleopatra. Pharamond a 5th century king of the Franks begun by La Calprenede in 1661, was unfinished when the author died and was successfully completed by Pierre d'Ortigue de Vaumoriere.
