The Golden State 1840-1864
Santa Barbara, California: Latin American Studio. Very Good. (1946). Hardcover. 4to 11" - 13" tall; 12 1/4" x 9 1/2" (booklet) , 12 3/4" x 9 7/8" (prints). Booklet bound in yellow wraps; illustrations are screen prints on stiff, thick cardboard stock. Booklet has 12 pages accompanied by 19 (of 20) screen prints. The Latin American Village (also known as the Latin American Studio and Latin American Village Studio) produced lavish educational materials in the 1940s related to the history of California as well as other childrens' books. This history of California covers 1840-1864 including Sutter's Fort, the Bear Flag Revolt, the gold rush and more. Each illustration is beautifully produced, showing a crisp image in four colors and is explained by several paragraphs in the text. A scarce collection with OCLC locating 2 copies and rare in the original box. Condition: Ex-library though the markings are unobtrusive and limited to a stamp on a couple pages of text, and the versos of the prints. Otherwise fine with faint marginal toning in a very good box that shows moderate wear and tape repair. Lacking illustration #13, "The Thirty-First State".
