De Rebus Gestis Alexandri Magni Libri.
London, Jacob Tonson, & John Watts, 1716. 8vo. [189 x 115 x 24 mm]. 18th century dark blue full straight-grained goatskin binding with five raised bands to richly gilt spine. Two compartments lettered in gilt, the remaining four elaborately gilt tooled with a symmetrical pattern of flowers, leaves, and fleur-de-lys-inspired "crowns". Top and bottom of spine elegantly gilt tooled with bows from which are hanging flowers and leaves. The raised bands as well as the capitals with gilt lines. Boards with two single gilt line-borders, inbetween which an elaborate broad blind-tooled border in a floral pattern. The inner gilt line-border with inner corners elaborately gilt, built up from small flowers, leaves, and stars on a studded background. Each corner is capsuled in by two gilt bows that have a small fleurs-de-lys at the gathering and at the corners where they meet the line-border. Edges of boards with a single gilt line, inner gilt dentelles. All edges gilt. Minor wear to extremities. Internally some brownspotting, mostly to first and last leaves. An old annotation to the front free end-paper (stating "Roger Payne Binding"). Title-page printed in red and black and with a woodcut vignette. Privilege-leaf with large woodcut arms and woodcut initial. Lovely full-page engraved plate at the beginning. Beautiful woodcut vignette and initial to beginning of dedication, and lovely woodcut vignettes and initials to the following leaves as well as to the last leaf of text and the beginning of the index. (18), 272, (8, -index) pp. + 1 engraved plate.. This lovely London-edition of Curtius' "On the History of Alexander the Great" is as far as we can determine surely bound by Roger Payne, not only in the exact same style, but also having the tools in common with other bindings that are undobtedly by Payne
