They Came Like Swallows
New York: Harper and Brothers. 1937. Early reprint. Boards soiled, a sound, good plus copy in a very good plus dustwrapper with a little offsetting on the rear panel, some faint dampstaining, but with the price intact. The book bears a long Inscription by Maxwell to a noted editor, discussing the book: "Dear Bob, I wrote the first draft of part I on that Wisconsin farm, and redid it seven times at the McDowell Colony, in the summer of 1935. Part II was written in Urbana, Illinois, where I was living in the house of a friend, whose English papers I corrected in exchange for room and board and five books a month -- an arrangement she thought up so I could go on writing and not starve to death. Part III I wrote there also, in ten days, walking the floor and brushing the tears out of my eyes so I would see the keys on the typewriter. W.M." Author's second novel and exceptionally scarce signed. .
