Signed Manuscript ALS Letter
Berlin, 1878. Signed Manuscript Letter by Gustav Nachtigal on his personal printed stationery. 8vo. double-leaf featuring the writer's gilt and blue monogram initials. Leaf measures approximately 18cm x 11,5cm. Text is in German. Very good condition. Nachtigal emerged from darkest Africa at Khartoum in the winter of 1874, after having been given up for lost. This letter is contemporary to the release of his account 'Sahara and Sudan', the first edition appearing a few months later in 1879. His accomplishments and the journey, described within, placed him in the top ranking of discoverers. Shortly after this letter was written, following France's establishment of a protectorate over Tunisia in 1881, Nachtigal was sent there as consul-general for the German Empire, where he remained there until 1884, almost to the end of his days. . Signed Letter.
