Attractive signed Truman presidential photograph inscribed to pioneer stateswoman, Margaret A Mahoney, Ohio?s first woman Senate President pro Tempore
"Photograph Signed ?Kindest regards to Hon. Margaret A. Mahoney / Harry S. Truman? on the photographic surface as President. Gelatin silver sepia print, 7.5? x 9.5? image, overall 11? x 13.75?. Fine condition.Democrat Margaret A. Mahoney of Cleveland served in the Ohio State House of Representatives from 1939-1942 and in the Ohio State Senate from 1943-1950. In 1948, she was a Presidential Elector for Truman. In 1949, her colleagues elected her unanimously as Majority Leader and Senate President pro Tempore, the first woman to ever hold this position. She retired in 1950 because of the low salary and went back to practicing law. She later held cabinet positions in the administrations of Governors Frank J. Lausche and Michael DiSalle. Mahoney had a sense of humor, and was well-respected. When told she belonged in her home, the proper place for a woman, she said she would quit if someone would marry her. In 1943, staging a three-day walkout protesting the treatment of one of her bills, she received the following note from the committee to which her bill was sent: ?Where, oh where, can Margaret be / And what makes her so blue? / Come back, beloved Senator. / We?ve recommended Bill 272.?"
