This poetic work deals with the notorious 1778 Wyoming Valley [Pennsylvania] Massacre, an event which has been called "the surpassing horror of the Revolution." John Butler, the leader of the massacre was a loyalist commander in the Revolutionary War. In 1776 he organized a band of motley marauders - white men and Indians. He later accompanied Sir John Johnson in his raid on the Schoharie and Mohawk Indian settlements in 1780.
