The Opera House Murders
Faber and Faber Ltd., London,, 1940. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. A superb copy in the very slightly rubbed dust jacket. First Edition, First Impression. Having taken a degree in English at the University of Hull in 1937 Billany worked as a teacher until joining the army at the start of the war. He was captured and imprisoned in Italy until the capitulation in 1943. Fleeing the advancing German army he deposited two manuscripts with an Italian civilian who sent them to England at the end of the war. They would be published as The Cage and The Trap. Billany was last seen trying to cross the Ardennes in 1943 but apparently never made contact with Allied forces and was presumed dead. This title is rare in dust jacket.
