The Boatswain's Whistle. Nos. 1-8 [of 10 issues].
Published at the National Sailor's Fair Nov 9 to Nov 17, 1864, Boston - First and only printing of this scarce journal, the first 8 of 10 issues (lacking November 18 and 19, 1864). Folio; 80pp; 8 pages per issue. Bound: original self wrappers, with front printed in black, "The Boatswain's Whistle. / National Sailors' Fair, Boston." around an engraved image of a sailor on deck blowing a whistle; printed on poor quality paper that is discolored and a bit brittle, split at folds, some staing at foredges, chipped at corners and foredges, still a very good set of these scarce daily newspaper printed during the National Sailors Fair held in Boston in 1864. Edited by Julia Ward Howe, she contributed articles as did other notable New England authors, including Maria S. Cummins with a story that ran through most issues, "Phases in the Life of Jack Oakheart." Other original contributions (either poetry or prose) were made by Emerson, Channing, Dana, Whittier, Everett, Holmes, and Lowell, mostly on nautical themes. . Women contributors included Mrs. Sigourney, Phoebe Cary and Harriet Kimball. There is a large article on Harriet Hosmer, noting the American sculptor and creator of "Zenobia" was returning to Boston from Rome. There is an obituary notice for "Moll Pitcher" of Lynn. There is a brief letter from Abraham Lincoln and an article on whale fisheries by Charles Cliffford. Ephemera from a Sanitary Commission fair is rare; this run of newspapers under the direction of Julia Ward Howe especially so. BAL 9422, 5242, 1416, etc. See an Image. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
