FIRST EDITION WITH AUTHOR'S CLIPPED SIGNATURE,1790, 4to, 270 x 210 mm, 10¾ x 8¼ inches, 5 plates, 3 folding, the 2 singles being views of a vine and of a vineyard, pages: xvi, (4), 224, complete with half-title, 4 pages of subscribers, and 14 pages of index, 2 folding plates face unnumbered leaves of explanation, bound in modern quarter dark brown calf over brown cloth sides, gilt dividing line, raised bands to spine, gilt lettered red morocco label, new endpapers. Mark of removed bookplate on front pastedown, signature of author pasted on reverse of half-title, 2 small tears and slight browning to fore-edge of 2 subscribers leaves, now neatly repaired with archival tape, large pale stain to lower corner of pages 1-7, not affecting text, another smaller and much paler to same corner of pages 49-56 and 73-80, fore-edge of 1 folding plate very slightly worn, tiny closed edge tear to 2 pages. A very good copy. The treatise is divided into four books: 1, The Vine; 2, The Vinery; 3, Grafting; 4, Vineyards. Gabler, Wine into Words, page 265, G37890.
