c. 1862 Admiral David Farragut Signed Carte de Visite
- David G. Farragut (1801-1870) was a lifelong U.S. Navy man. He began as a midshipman at the tender age of 9, and rose through the ranks over a long career. He was Rear Admiral from 1862-1864, before being promoted to Vice Admiral, then Admiral in 1866. He is one of only six naval officers to be awarded the honor of "active duty for life" status. This is an excellent "from life" carte de visite photograph of Farragut. It has the backmark of Charles Deforest Fredricks (1823-1894), one of the period's best-known photographers, and one of the first to create cartes de visite. It is boldly signed on the verso, "D. G. Farragut, Rear Admiral." Fine, with fine contrast and resolution. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
