New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1990. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. Fine/Fine Dust Jacket.. New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1990. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Edition/First Printing. 718 pages. The author's breakthrough debut book. One of the most sensational literary debuts of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a very small and limited first print run as a hardcover original by a University Press. Presents Camille Paglia's breakthrough book. Twenty years in the making (the basis was her doctoral thesis, supervised by her mentor, Harold Bloom, our greatest living literary critic), it took Camille Paglia almost as long to get the book published, with a string of seven rejections by commercial publishing houses. "Sexual Personae" is the most audacious and rebarbative work of literary and cultural criticism of the last decade of the 20th century, by a writer who openly proclaims herself to be the authentic voice of the rebellious and influential "Sixties Generation". Paglia is actually quite rigorous and old-fashioned when it comes to her scholarship. Her erudition is breathtaking, and her book is studded with arresting insights that will surprise and unsettle many readers. An intellectual is valuable not because of the answers he or she gives (that role belongs to the so-called pundit) but because of the questions he or she asks. In her own singularly dramatic, over-the-top, and compelling manner, Camille Paglia is, in effect, calling for another Cultural Revolution, which will finally free Americans and the West of the shackles of its Judaeo-Christian "Puritan" legacy (mainly, institutional religion and the pernicious culture of political correctness) and bring about a return to the glories of the Graeco-Roman "pagan" past, which she argues is deeply repressed yet very much alive. Even if she will always be misunderstood, Camille Paglia has pulled off a genuine triumph: "Sexual Personae" is an enduring contribution, one that she has not herself surpassed, her two brilliant collections of essays being an application to contemporary issues of the ideas in her ground-breaking book. An absolute "must-have" title for Camille Paglia collectors. This copy is very prominently, thoughtfully, and beautifully signed, dated (before official publication), and inscribed in blue pen on the front free endpaper by the author: "For Kent - SP and its author thank you for your heroic proofreading, which caught so many errors and kept these creamy pages pristine! Camille December 1989". Kent Christensen is a close friend of Paglia, is mentioned in the Acknowledgments Page, and proof-read at least one more Paglia book, "Break, Blow, And Burn". Her thank-you note (in her beautiful handwriting) to her vigilant and erudite proof-reader comes with another page-long note from her, commenting on the book's choice of words and overall literary style, which sounds exactly like her non-stop speech. Please note: Kent underlined some passages in the book that unmistakably meant the most to him as reader and proof-reader. This title is a great book. This is the only such signed copy of the true First Edition/First Printing available online and is in fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Beware: Almost all other copies available online have serious flaws or are subsequent printings. A rare, one-of-a-kind signed copy thus. One of the most important and influential living American intellectual voices. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER CAMILLE PAGLIA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0300043961.
