THE WINE GROWERS & WINE-COOPERS' MANUAL. With plans and alcoholic tables
London, Wm Tegg & Co., 1878.. FIRST UK EDITION 1878, 8vo, author's coat of arms on title page, a few illustrations in the text, chiefly sections of stills, pages: xv, (1), 166 including index, plus 5 pages of adverts, in the original publisher's burgundy black stamped decorated cloth, lettered gilt on upper cover and spine, pale yellow endpapers. Spine slightly faded, spine gilt dull, head and tail of spine slightly worn with tiny nicks to cloth, small piece torn off front endpaper, early name at top of title page, title page lightly browned, contents clean and bright. A very good tight copy. First published in New York in 1877, the author was associated for 24 years with a prominent wine firm in Sicily. The information on sherry is based on Hardman's personal visit to that area in 1869. The book covers viticulture, especially soils, the culture of vines and wine making, distillation, alcoholometry, casks and their treatment. See Gabler, Wine into Words, page 120, G23070.
