THE VICTIM
New York:: Vanguard Press. (1947). First edition. His second novel, one that deals with anti-semitism. Anthony Burgess picked it as one of his "Ninety-Nine Novels: the Best in English since 1939," calling Bellow's later, bigger novels "brilliant but shrill in comparison with this quiet early masterpeice." Faint, unavoidable offset to front pastedown and very light rubbing to corners, otherwise close to fine in price-clipped dust jacket with white spine lettering a little tanned and a few tiny chips on corners and spine ends. Tasteful bookplate of biographer Scott Donaldson and his wife on back pastedown under flap.
