This souvenir's presentation commemorated "...the Anniversary of holing through the First Tunnel under the Hudson River between New Jersey and New York on the Eleventh of March, 1904, and upon the Occasion of holing through the Fourth and last Tunnel forming the complete "Grand Circuit" for the operation of the Uptown and Downtown lines between Jersey City, Hoboken and New York, on the eleventh of March, 1909 Sherry's, New York March 11, 1909"; with 21 very finely-taken photogravures of the engineering feats performed by Jacobs & Davies; printed on good heavy quality paper stock, tissue-guarded and titled with a short paragraph of explanatory text, collated complete; including: holing through the first tunnel under the Hudson River; holing the South Tunnel Uptown Line; south tunnel, uptown line shield reversed driving through...; hydraulic shield erected in tunnel ready to commence construction; shield after completing its journey from the North River to Twelfth Street and Sixth Avenue - "...26,000 sticks of dynamite were used to clear the passage ahead..."; North Tunnel, Downtown Line "The Lid Removed" heavy blow during construction at the Red Star Line Dock Thanksgiving Day, 1908; construction of double-deck reinforced concrete caissons in yard of the Lackawanna Railroad, Jersey City; caisson with lower deck arched; foundation and coffer-dam at Church Street; terminal station and building at Church St.; iron-lined tube tunnel Morton Street into Greenwich St.; caisson enlargements under Fulton St.; typical cross section of tunnel under river complete and in operation; Hoboken terminal, showing the typical groined arch construction of reinforced concrete used in stations; turn-out between twin tunnels under Christopher St.; turnout at Nineteenth St. & 6th Ave; West end of Pennsylvania Station, Jersey City showing the junction of lines to Newark and Hoboken...southerly half; underground double-deck caissons...85 feet below high water (this illustration courtesy of Scribner's magazine); picture of model exhibited at Jamestown Exposition, illustrating precise method of construction of tube tunnels, with air locks and mechanical appliances. Oakman, Cornelius Vanderbilt and about a dozen others; and a page each devoted to history of the tunnel construction, with important dates in the process, 1873 - 1909 and statistical information concerning construction of the Hudson tunnel system - Church Street Terminal, Terminal Station Approaches and Tunnel - number of caissons, cubic contents & excavation data, concrete used, distances, iron, coal, cement, dynamite, labor stats; oblong format, approx. 9" x 11 1/2" size; the images average about 5" x 6 1/2"; printed one side only throughout, not credited; original full red leather binding, with gilt cover titles in central panel, with decorative surrounding design of wreath and putto; top cover detached, edges worn & chipped; contents including all gravures clean and in very good condition..
