(not affecting lettering), chip from top edge of front panel. approximately 43 mm long by 5 mm deep with some abrasion, small chip. from upper right front corner, small tear to upper right rear corner,. some age-darkening to spine panel, and some darkening to rear panel.. Uncommon in the jacket. (#125680). First U.S. edition. Maugham was a British agent during World War I and his book is based on first hand knowledge of the world of espionage. According to Eric Ambler, ASHENDEN OR THE BRITISH AGENT was the first fictional work on the subject [the life of a secret agent] by a writer of stature with firsthand knowledge of what he is writing about."
