Venus Sardonica -- 1/50 copies
np: Privately Printed (Alex Field?). c. 1929. Limited ed. Loose in Folder. Fine. Number 10 of only 50 copies for presentation, signed by Blaine. c. 1929. First Edition. Suite of 50 plates, one of which is an original drawing. Housed in a red cloth folder. Plates measure 9 inches wide x 12 inches tall. Contents FINE. Folder with mild edgewear and discoloration. According to Roland Trenary, author of the book Mahlon Blaine: One-Eyed Visionary, ''In 1929 Blaine decided to publish a folio of his sly and clever drawings that combined fantasy and sexuality... 50 extravaganzas each depicting one or more uniquely fantastic part-human / part-creature characters involved in 50 sorts and degrees of sexual activity... one of each of the fifty original drawings was put into a red folder along with prints of the other 49... There was no title page, no limitation page, no typography at all. How much did these sell for originally? Reportedly a hundred dollars per set. World renowned erotica expert Gershon Legman stated in 1982 that Venus Sardonica was the high point of erotica publishing in America.'' Our copy actually has a limitation page but we are unable to determine which of the 50 plates is the original drawing. We are including a copy of Trenary's book with this item as well.
