A Concise History of the Mormon Battalion in the Mexican War, 1846-1847.
[Salt Lake City]: 1881 [but 1882]. - 8vo., (8 6/8 x 5 6/8 inches). Original black cloth, spine gilt (rebacked preserving most of the original spine). Provenance: with the bookplate of James S. Copley on the front paste-down, his sale, Sotheby's New York "Magnificent American, Historical Documents", 10th May 2011, lot 1059. First edition, of "THE EARLIEST AND PROBABLY THE BEST BOOK ON THE FAMOUS MORMON BATALLION OF THE MEXICAN WAR" (Zamorano 80). Tyler was a member of the Battalion which was organized in Council Bluffs and marched to San Diego. A complete list of the members of the battalion is included at the end. Many of them remained in California and became notable citizens. Tyler records a battalion anthem: "All hail the brave Battalion! / The noble, valiant band, / That went and served our country / With willing heart and hand. / Altho' we're called disloyal / By many a tongue and pen, / Our nation boasts no soldiers / So true as 'Mormon' men."
