New York: Covici, Friede Publishers, 1928. full blue morocco,elaborately decorated in gilt, spine with raised bands, extra gilt, lettered in gilt, top edges gilt, mauve moiree silk endpapers. Upper cover detached (but present), slight rubbing else fine. Quarto. Illustrated by Alexander King One of 960 copies on Aurelaian paper. This copy is one of the first thirteen copies with an original signed watercolour drawing by Alexander King and specially bound. This unnumbered copy also signed by the author on the half title The text is printed in black with certain passages in blue to distinguish thoughts from spoken words. With the tasteful small bookplate of Mary Pinkerton Carlisle, daugther of the Pinkerton Detective Agency and wife of Jay F. Carlisle, stockbroker and Governor of the American Stock Exchange during the crash. The Carlisle Estate on Long Island was “one of the showplaces of the East.” It was demolished in 1938 after the deaaths, 8 months apart, of the Carlisles. The entire contents of the house were auctioned off by Parke-Bernet in their first auction .
