Anthony Goicolea is an artistic descendant of Cindy Sherman: He uses himself in all of the photographs as the model for all of his imaginary characters. There is a crucial twist to Sherman's concept: Goicolea evokes and re-creates in painstaking and masterly detail the life-story of a young man, presumably himself (of ambivalent sexuality and erotic appeal) and his gang of equally attractive characters as they make the journey to adulthood. The digital manipulation involved is breathtaking yet never calls attention to itself. In the best sequences, Goicolea's imagery shows that so-called state-of-the-art digital technology can be used to tell a poetic narrative of a coming-of-age that once seen, one is not likely to forget. The photographs are witty, moving, funny, sad, happy, and glorious. "He returns again and again to his themes of sexuality, unflinching self-exploration and the never-ending contest between victims and victimizers. We are torn between the desire to witness these strivers and underdogs evolve gloriously into calm, powerful grown-ups and wanting to observe the Peter Pans as they play out the piercing struggles of adolescence, such apt metaphors for the rest of life's battles, into eternity" (Jennifer Dalton) . An absolute "must-have" title for Anthony Goicolea collectors. This copy is one of the Deluxe Edition, indicated as such on the Back Limitation Page, and is very prominently and beautifully signed in black fountain pen by Anthony Goicolea. Laid-in is a 6 X 12 inch original color print, "The Diggers (Part III) ", also very prominently and beautifully titled, numbered, signed, and dated in black fountain pen on verso by the artist/photographer. The print is different from the one that came with the First Deluxe Edition. Copies of the First Deluxe Edition sold out before publication and now command between $2500 and $3000. This Second Deluxe Edition has become just as collectible. This is the one of few copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 104 plates. One of the most brilliant living American artist/photographers. A flawless collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER ANTHONY GOICOLEA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1931885117.
