'Matthew Paris (d. 1259?) is commonly regarded as England's greatest medieval historian. The 'Historia Anglorum', begun in 1250, is an abridgement, concentrating on English history, of the 'Chronica Majora', but it also includes some additional material for the period A.D. 1067-1253. Matthew Paris became a monk of St. Albans in 1217, and succeeded Roger Wendover as historiographer of that abbey in 1236. He drew his information from many documentary sources including papal bulls and royal letters and from conversations with eye-witnesses of the events narrated. (.) His style is graphic; his view is broad; and his opinions are expressed with fervour. He condems what he regarded as abuses of the court and church; he rebukes pope, king, nobles, and clergy, when he deems them worthy of blame. Matthew was a man of many interests and attainments'. E. Graves. A bibliography of English history to 1485. Oxford, 1975, 2941. STC 19210
