History of the Political and Military Transactions in India
London: Kingsbury, Parbury, & Allen, , 1825. during the Administration of the Marquess of Hastings 1813-1823. Enlarged from the Narrative published in 1820. 2 volumes octavo ( 223 × 134 mm). Original brown sand-grained cloth, title gilt to spine. Portrait frontispiece to Volume I and 4 other plates in all, 5 folding maps, 2 folding letter-press tables, one of them double-sided. Small book-tickets of Mr. H. Hottinguer to the front pastedowns. Volume I neatly rebacked with the original spine laid down, joints of Volume II slightly cracked, but holding, some foxing to the prelims, offsetting from some maps, light toning, but overall a very nice set, largely unopened, in the original cloth. Originally published in 1820 this work is "generally considered to be the best and most trustworthy narrative of the events of that time." (ODNB) This edition was revised and extended to 1823 when the author was in England on leave, in 1825. Prinsep went out to India in 1808, aged 16, as a writer, and served on the staff of the the Marquess of Hastings during his tour through Oudh and the North-Western Provinces; the Pindari, and Third Mahratta Wars. This edition includes an account of the Gurkha War and "the completion of the details of that with Mahrattas to the taking of Aseergurh, together with the addition of a new and fuller summary of the political and financial result of these operations …" (Preface) A very pretty set of this, the most authoritative edition.
