Memorial of the French and Dutch Loan Collection Edinburgh International Exhibition 1886
David Douglas. Hardcover. A Limited Edition of 520 copies, of which the first 100 were large format with etchings on Japanese. This volume is numbered within the first 100 - No. 53. Bound in a heavy twill oatmeal cloth with gilt titling, the rubbing is clearly visible but without noteworthy damage save a little fraying at the points of the corners where the cloth has been folded around. The gilt titling and centrepiece have not escaped surface rubbing but remain clear, the top corner has a faintly visible "Japanese Proofs" in gilt as per the special edition. There is some bumping at the corners and over the open edge. As a general note, the exterior is only moderately worn for its age and carries only the wear you would expect from general handling. There are no structural issues with this behemoth, the hinges are rock solid and the pages are solid in the binding. The pages are a heavy grade paper and robust, they are unevenly bound and the outer edges have collected a deep tone. Inside, the pages have some handling related marking and often a lightly toned silhouette of the opposing illustration but remain generally clean and clear. No tears or lose pages other than some wear to the outer edges. . Good. 1888.
