To Surgeons and Physicians
- Boston Med. Surg. J., 35/17. - Boston, Wednesday, November 25, 1846, 8°, pp.329-348, orig. wrappers, boxed in a fine slip case. First Edition - Very Rare, only on the original wrappers! - The first printed document issued by Morton is a single-page folded sheet addressed "To Surgeons and Physicians" stating that the "Subscriber" is prepared to furnish "a person fully competent to administer his compounds." Two copies have been traced, one in Massachusetts Historical Society, addressed to Dr.J. Masson Warren, bears a postmark dated November 20 (1846), the other at the Essex Institute , Salem, Mass, addressed to Dr. Henry Wheatland, Salem Mass., postmarked "Boston, Nov.23." - The same day Morton also published a notice in the Boston Evening Transcript, stating that he has applied for Letters Patent. - The Boston Medical and Surgical Journal, Nov. 25, 1846. Notice headed "To Surgeons and Physicians", on back Advertising Sheet. The text is the same as No.1 above, but Morton adds in a postscript: "Surgeons and Physicians who may wish to witness this effect of the new agent, are respectfully invited to call at my rooms. In the next No. of the Journal a name for this new operation will be given." There is also a second notice by Morton on this page offering instruction in Dentistry." -cf. Keys.
