Paris Ancien Maison Morel no date circa l875 - This magnificently produced work serves both as a scholarly record of the pictures and imagery in churches and the decoration of great houses and palaces and as a pattern book for decorators and designers today. The two volumes each comprises 60 fine coloured plates (printed by Firmin Didot) with descriptive texts. In the first series the decorations are drawn from Churches; these show murals of biblical scenes set in the context of very elaborately decorated geometrical and floral patterns. In the second volume the decorations have been collected from great houses and palaces . These decorations are mainly secular, drawing on the traditions of antiquity, chinoiserie, with extensive use of gold , marble and plasterwork. The two series are uniformly bound in green half morocco, sturdy but lightly rubbed with the plates and texts mounted on stubs. The two volumes
