Lambarde a prominent antiquary of the era, as well as personal consultant to Elizabeth I, in the capacity of Keeper of the Records in the Tower- this first county history of his is considered "a model of arrangement and style". [DNB]. And while this work of Lambarde's is not particularly rare, it is rather uncommon to find it in such presentable condition, textually complete & with both maps present. Period ink ownership signatures to title page dated 1604 & 1656 [Robert Newman]. Anglia Heptarchia map slightly shaved at bottom [no significant loss]. Small tear in F1 margin; clean, closed tear across E8, with no loss. The occasional stain. Withal, a solid, respectable VG copy. Full leather binding with period boards & modern respining to style. Modern ffep. 8vo: A - 2O8 2P6. 1st edition thus, & 2nd edition overall of the 1st UK County History (Cox III, pp. 127-128; Goldsmith 275; STC 15176; Upcott I, p. 350). [10], 588, [2], [6] pp. This copy with an interleaved leaf, with period ink mss annotations, prior to the printed Table @ rear. Printed glosses. Ink mss glosses in a period hand.
