William Heinemann 1919 - Cloth, G. xxii+376pp, colour frontis, 87 b/w plates [ inc one panorama ], folding map, 6 maps in the text & 2 b/w figs, index, a fair copy - the wartime paper browned at the edges as usual, this copy in plain red cloth probably rebound in the 1930's, Times Book Club ticket on the rear pastedown, map badly torn but complete, the index pages very yellowed whereas the main text is only yellowed around the margins - more of a cream colour to the text. A copy in need of restoration. The true first edition [ printed on poor quality paper stocks due to the First World War ] of one of the most, if not the the most, famous Expedition accounts of all time. In 1914 the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition set sail in the Endurance under the command of Shackleton. He had had sucess on two previous expeditions and this expedition had high hopes of sucess. But the Endurance became Ice-bound & was crushed leading to one of the greatest feats of endevour in the annals of exploration. Shackelton managed to rescue all of his men and considering the difficulties, in good time. 1250 grams. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
