Bound for the author in dark green half-morocco with cloth-covered boards, richly gilt.. Only edition, uncommon. Tagore (1840-1914) was a pious Hindu, wealthy land owner and gem specialist. He earned worldwide scientific reputation, however, by extensive researches into Hindu music and drama. The present monograph exemplifies the ten incarnations of Vishnu on earth are represented. Each incarnation is narrated after the ,Puranas' and the classical epics. The accompanying songs are given in Sanskrit and European notation as well. Tagore also explains the stage, lights, curtain and grouping of his living pictures which were acted as ,Murttis', i.e. ,without any expressive pantomimic gestures, and in which a Sutradhara' is introduced, who explains the mute figures' (Preface). The lithographs with scenes from ,Tableaux vivants' performed in Tagore's house. - Bold autograph dedication by the author on front fly-leaf, dated ,Calcutta, 4 August 1881'. The dedicatee was ,His Excellence, Count Münster, the Imperial German Ambassador at London', i.e. the German diplomat Georg zu Münster (1820-1902). - Spine faded, hinges and corners somewhat chafed, foxing to plates. Nonetheless a fine copy.
