In a Sangorski & Sutcliffe binding. - Three volumes; size of bindings: 5 3/4 in. x 8 3/4 in., Volume 1: frontispiece reproducing an engraving; xviii, 726 pp.; Vol. 2: viii, 611 pp.; Vol. 3: ix, 551 pp. (with errata on p. [552]); all are illustrated with various types of reproductions of titlepages, illustrations, etc. from early editions. General Introductions, and specific introductions to individual poets & works, by George Saintsbury. Volume 1 Containing: Chamberlayne's Pharonnida and English Jubilee; Benlowe's Theophila and the Poems of Katherine Philips and Patrick Hannay. Volume 2: Marmion's Cupid and Psyche; Kynaston's Leoline and Sydanis and Cynthiades; Poems of John Hall; Sidney Godolphin and Philip Ayres; Chalkhill's Thealma and Clearchus; Poems of Patrick Carey and William Hammond; Bosworth's Arcadius and Sepha, etc. Volume 3: John Cleveland; Thomas Stanley; Henry King; Thomas Flatman; Nathaniel Whiting. Bound in quarter, red-brown crushed morocco leather spines, sides and cornerpieces, with five raised bands on the spines, gilt-lettered titles and gilt designs in the compartments, blind-stamped borders to the sides & corner-pieces, and rose cloth over boards; headbands, top-edges gilt; with marbled paper endpapers; binder's stamp at the top of the reverse of each marbled endpaper: Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, London. The fifth compartment of the spine on volume one, shows 1/2 inch gouge to the leather, one band on volume three shows abrasion, light fading to spines; former owner's printed book labels pasted to the marbled paste-downs in each volume, some age-related tan spotting to endpapers, flyleaves. Overall, a fine, and handsomely bound set. Scarce item in a fine binding. The scan shows the spines, and part of the front cover of volume three. Weight: 9 lbs. Postage is extra on this item.
