Porgy & Bess
New York: Verve,, 1957. Original set of 2 12-inch 33 RPM vinyl records in gatefold sleeve, with tipped-in ten-page text insert. The album cover is about near fine with shallow creasing and light bumping to the panel corners, rubbing to spine and top edges. Both albums are included, the playing surfaces are visually very good with light scratches and scuffing. The autograph is about fine with slight brushing to the first letter of the inscription. Verve MGV-4011-2, original two album set, released in 1957. Signed and inscribed by Louis Armstrong in his characteristic green ink at the album illustration by David Stone Martin; "To [illegible] from (Satchmo) Louis Armstrong". This now classic Gershwin collaboration by the two jazz greats, with orchestral arrangements by Russell Garcia, won the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 2001. Producer and owner of Verve Records, Norman Granz, gave this original release the deluxe treatment; released in a handsome gatefold cover designed by Los Angeles mosaicist Joseph Young, photographs by Herman Leonard, a striking David Stone Martin illustration and brochure with an essay by Lawrence D. Stewart on the history of the piece. A classic jazz recording, uncommon signed.
