Sea Power in its Relations to the War of 1812
London: Sampson Low, Marston & company, Limited,, 1905. 2 volumes, large octavo. Publisher's later dark blue combed cloth, titles to spines gilt. With the dust jackets. Photogravure frontispiece and 8 other plates to each, 25 maps and plans in all, 5 of them folding. Front hinges slightly cracked, else a very good set in jackets. First UK edition, same year as the US, from American sheets with a cancel title. Originally published in parts by Scribner's between January 1904 and January 1905, this volume constitutes the final part of Mahan's highly influential Sea Power series. The bindings and dust jackets on this set are clearly later, almost certainly from the 1940s when perhaps some unbound sheets were found in the warehouses of Sampson Low. Sets of Clowes's Royal Navy, from the same publishers, have also been encountered in similar bindings and jackets, and the jacket design itself is very similar to that of Sea Power by T124 (pseudonym of Capt. Russell Grenfell), a well-received and widely-read study published in 1941.
