America siue India Nova.
Amsterdam: 1595 - Size: 465 x 370 mm. Very good condition, some light foxing and general toning, mainly affecting the margins. Copper engraving. Original colour. This is the only known map to have been engraved by Gerard Mercator's grandson, Michael Mercator. "It is a hemispherical map contained within an attractive floral design, and surrounded by four roundels, one of which contains the title. The other three contain maps of the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba and Hispaniola, all spheres of Spanish influence" (Burden). Curiosities include: the great bulge in the south-west of South America, a large New Guinea and the Great Southern Continent. French text on verso. A beautiful and fascinating early, unique map of the Americas. Burden, The Mapping of North America, 87.
