Homemade Book of Twelve Hand-Colored City Views
Chez Crepy - N.d., circa mid eighteenth century. Twelve hand-colored plates each on heavy card. Each measuring 30 by 21 cm. (The book is 30 by 24.5.) The hand-coloring is somewhat crude, with the mostly reds and blues applied as imprecise daubs mostly. Yet the prints are themselves very interesting, showing the following cities: Charleroi, in Belgium, twice; Cazal, or Casale Monferrata, in Italy; Cartagena, in Spain; Cadiz, Spain; Nicosia, in Cyprus; Burgos, Spain; Budapest; Brussels; Brisac; Bordeaux; and Barcelona. The views are of the cities as they once were, even at the time of the printing, and a few of them are showing warfare as well, with soldiers or ships a part of the scene. The compiler of the book folded over the sides of the prints onto the versos of the cards, and so there is some incidental loss as a result of that. Light soiling and wear to the prints.
