Number 11 of 300 (of a total of 340) copies signed by Soupault, with an original lithograph, signed by Andre Masson (11/300). 1946 - [Partial limitation statement]: "Edition originale de L'arme secrete de Philippe Soupault. Il a tire de cet ouvrage: [-] 300 exemplaires [copies] sur velin pur chiffon de Rives B. F. K., [watermarked paper] filigrane au nom de l'editeur et numerotes de 1 a 300 [this copy is one of the 300]. Tous ces ouvrages sont ornes de 6 dessins et d'une lithographie originale d'Andre Masson tiree par Desjobert et signee par l'artiste. La totalite des exemplaires portent la signature de l'auteur. No 11 [signed]: Philippe Soupault." "Acheve d' imprimer Le present ouvrage sur les presses de Joseph Zichieri, maitre-imprimeur a Paris, le quinze [15th] novembre 1946. La mise en page a ete concue par Andre-Charles Gervais. La typographie a ete executee en romain de Caslon de la fonderie Radiguer." 8 in. x 11 in., paper covers printed in red and black; half-title; the frontispiece is a signed, original lithograph of a seated figure, writing; printed in black and gray tones on white, with limitation number (11/300), and artist's signature in pencil, under the image; title-page printed in red and black. [12]pp., pp. 13-59 + index title & index + signed limitation page + printer's colophon. 33 poems in French, with six surrealistic Masson illustrations in black on white, and the signed frontispiece. Foreword by the author in French. White paper wrappers with the titling in red and black on the front cover. The glassine paper is present over the covers (this glassine shows light, age-related tanning, chipping to the spine ends of the glassine; the glassine is not shown in the scan). Most of the top-edges of the pages are unopened. A fine copy. This is is very scarce artist's book, of which there was only a single printing (1946). Philippe Soupault was a major French Surrealist poet, and Andre Masson was influenced by Surrealism. "The Artist and the Book 1860-1960" (pp. 133-135), gives these references for books illustrated by Masson: Albertina, Andre Masson Graphik catalogue (to 1958); Leiris and Limbour (to 1947); Mornand-Thome p. 304 (to 1949).
