Hewitt from maps drawn by James Wyld (the Elder), one of the foremost geographers of his time, with the title royal geographer, who introduced lithography to England. Containing very detailed maps of the world with an emphasis on Europe, but with several important maps showing the Americas and Australia. Most of the maps have a small vignette illustrating a feature of the region. This later edition has been revised and updated with 3 new maps: "Van Dieman's Land" [Tasmania], "New South Wales," and "Ross, Parry, and Franklin's Discoveries in the Arctic Circle." The maps showing America are Map XXXVII "America," which shows both North and South America with the vignette "Cascade of Regla, Near Mexico"; Map XXXVIII "North America," with the vignette "Ft. Niagara from the British Light House"; and Map XXXIX "United States," with the vignette "The Falls of Niagara," all showing the pre-Louisiana Purchase border at the Mississippi River. To the west of the United States, we see California (present-day Baja California), New California (with the towns of P. Diego, S. Clemente, Ft. St. Francisco, and C. Mendocino), Texas, S. Antonio, Laredo, New Madrid, and N. Orleans. "W. Florida" and "E. Florida" are portrayed as south of the United States, with no part of the U.S. bordering the Gulf of Mexico.
