Engraved portrait frontispiece to Volume I. Offsetting from the portrait, some light browning, spine slightly mottled, a little rubbed at the extremities, but overall very good. First Edition. Uncommon, first serious attempt at a biography. Louisbourg, Martinique, Leeward Islands, West Indies and North America during the War of Independence, Battle of the Saints, "By any standards the Saints was a magnificent victory in which the French were comprehensively beaten. The islands, including Jamaica, had been protected and an end was brought to the succession of failures that had followed Yorktown and restored in no small degree the tarnished British naval and military reputation among the European powers" (ODNB).
