Lives of the British Admirals: containing a new and accurate Naval History, from the earliest Periods, including the Naval Transactions of the Late War, and an Account of the Recent Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere, written under the inspection of Doctor Berkenhout - complete in 4 volumes
G. and J. Robinson, London 1785 - This work, in a shorter form, was first published in 1742 and went through many revisions and editions in the 18th and 19th centuries. This is one of the most significant and sought-after, containing important periods in British naval history, including the early engagements in the American War of Independence and discoveries by explorers such as Captain Cook. This set is finely bound in 18th Century full tan leather, with gilt titles on red leather title panels, raised bands and gilt rules on the spine. The bindings are in an unusually good state of preservation, with all hinges intact and very secure. Only very slight wear to the head and tail of volume 1 and head of spine of vol 4. Very good, tight, clean texts with negligible age-browning of blank end papers and just a few other leaves. All 4 frontispieces and 6 folding maps are present, each measuring approx 43 x 36 cms. There of West Indies, Europe, Asia, Africa, North America and South America. A heavy set, so extra shipping may be required, according to destination, insurance etc. See photographs attached.
