LOST HORIZON (EXCEEDINGLY RARE First Printing, with Original Promotional Material)
New York: Pocket Book, 1939. Hilton, James. LOST HORIZON. NY: Pocket Book Edition #1, (1939). FIRST PRINTING. A NEAR FINE, bright and square copy in original illustrated wrappers (slight lamination lift, tiny bit of edge-wear, previous owner's neat ink notation on the blank opposite the half-title) with absolutely no reading crease. The First Printing of the Pocket Book edition of LOST HORIZON has historical significance as the first ever mass-market paperback. It was the first exemplar of the affordable book for those individuals who either couldn't afford hardback books or had no means to carry them around. This small flexible format, cheap in cost (although beautiful in design) changed reading habits and publishers' practices forever. Although Pocket Book #1 was reprinted forty or fifty times and had sold millions of copies by the 1960s, few examples of its first print run have survived. This fantastic example is not only in exceptional condition, it contains two original inserts. An advertising card (3" by 5") encouraging readers to spread the word about Pocket Books. And an insert (4" by 6") encouraging movie-goers to see the Frank Capra film adaptation. Both inserts are in mint condition. This is only the second Fine copy that we have handled in the last twenty years and we've never before seen these inserts. LOST HORIZON (originally published in 1933) still remains the most famous fictional tale of modern Utopia, it brought Shangri-La to popular culture, and it inspired one of the greatest motion pictures of all time. . First Edition, Thus. Near Fine.
