The Conan Doyle Stories
JOHN MURRAY, London 1929 - This book was published in Arthur Conan Doyle's Lifetime. - Rare First Printing with the Original Dustjacket. - 6 Volumes in 1: The Ring and the Camp / Pirates and Blue Water / Terror and Mystery / Twilight and the Unseen / Adventure and Medical Life / Tales of Long Ago. - 76 Stories - 1216 pages. - Stated on the copyright page: First Edition in One Volume. 1929. - Preface by ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE is dated: April 26, 1929 - On the inner prelim of the original dustjacket, there is a message from Sir Winston Churchill who wrote: 'Of course I read every Sherlock Holmes story, but the works I like even more than the detective stories are the great historical novels which, like Sherlock Holmes, have certainly found a permanent place in English literature.'. - This volume comprises most of Conan Doyle's short stories other than those relating to the great detective Sherlock Holmes. - The ORIGINAL dustjacket bears the price of 20s net to the bottom of the inner front prelim. It has slight water damage to the bottom. It is a little soiled in general but it is complete and intact. - Boards are rust coloured cloth with gold/gilt lettering to the spine and front board. The spine cloth is lighter than the boards and there is a fair amount of soiling to the cloth. The binding remains tight. - Written inside the front board it states: 'Sitwell' - I am hoping the signature belongs to Edith Sitwell but this is not authenticated. - There is a minimum amount of foxing to the endpages and throughout the book. - 'There is an error in how many pages there actually are because there are in fact 1202 pages. It does not mean that there are 14 pages missing; it means that they made an error on the dustjacket. The very last story does actually finish on page 1202 because at the bottom of the last page the printers name appears which always appears on the very last page of a book'. - Apart from the page edges being browned, the pages are in a beautifully clean condition. - The top edge is still a deep red in colour. - Overall; a fabulous book. - Few small bonus items for fun: First is a small soft cardwrap book: 1925 - First Printing - Poetry by Edith Sitwell with coverart by Vanessa Bell. Published by: Leonard & Virginia Woolf at The Hogarth Press in 1925. Book Condition: There was not a dustjacket issued with this book. Vanessa Bell [Virginia Woolf's Sister] designed the beautiful illustration on the front board. Slim card covered book and spine is not present. Minor edge and corner wear, lightly scuffed and soiled. Pages are browned and foxed mainly to endpages and inner boards. Pages slight loose at margin but all is intact. Few small pencil notations. & A signed cheque written by Arthur Conan Doyle and a copy of his signature. [both are photocopies on glossy paper].
