First edition. Wheeler was born in Kilkenny, and emigrated to Canada with his family in 1876. He served an apprenticeship as a Dominion Land Surveyor with Rvley and Hamilton, and with Elihu Stewart in Collingwood, spending his first year in Canada surveying the Bruce Mines area of Ontario with Ryley and Hamilton, before joining Stewart in carrying out Indian Reserve surveys in Canada's new west. The present work is based on a photo-topographical survey of the Selkirk Range carried out in 1901-2, concentrating particularly on areas utilized by tourists and mountain climbers. In 1906, inspired by his mountain surveys, Wheeler founded the Alpine Club of Canada, he was the club's first President from 1906-10, editing the Canadian Alpine Journal from 1907 to 1930, he then served as managing director until 1926 when he retired and was elected Honorary President, continuing in that office until his death in 1945. He was the driving force behind two of the Club's most successful expeditions, the 1913 Mount Robson camp and the 1925 ascent of Mount Logan.
