British Butterflies and Their Transformations
London: Thomas Sanderson, 1857. Original Cloth. Collectible; Very Good. A lovely mid 19th century study of the transformations of British butterflies, supported thruout the text by 42 magnificent hand-colored plates. An ex-libris copy, cleanly and subtly so, and "a new edition, revised and corrected by the author" and also published (like the 1st printing) in 1857. Solid and VG in its russet cloth, with light rubbing to the panels and a re-backed spine, with bright gilt-lettering and a series of institutional numbers at the base. "County Borough of West Ham Reference Library" armorial bookplate at the front pastedown, one small institutional stamp to the title page. Happily, all of the hand-colored plates (including the additional vignette title page) are bright and very clean (with their accompanying tissue-guards) and are free of any sort of markings or stampings. The book itself is solid as well. Tight and VG, with new endsheets and discreet tape professionally reinforcing the hinges. Quarto, "characters and descriptions by J.O. Westwood, arranged and illustrated in a series of plates by H.N. Humphreys"
